Last season snatched the third and last position with rounds of 68 and 67, but this time scores of 73 and 70 were good enough for joint second place with four spots up for grabs.

He might even have won it, missing a one-foot putt to tie the lead on the 15th, bogeying the next and losing by two.

While at Nova Southeastern University in Florida he represented Europe in the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup college match against the United States.

Viktor Hovland was a teammate and Collin Morikawa among the opposition.

“Royal St George’s was a great experience - to play in my first major and make the cut,” he said.

“So it was a goal of mine this year to get to The 150th Open at St Andrews. It's what you dream of growing up, what you work so hard for.”
