Played the first major of his life at the 2021 US Open, coming a spectacular joint fourth, and then made his Open Championship debut at Royal St George's thanks to three runner-up finishes on the DP World Tour earlier in the season.

A graduate of the circuit’s Qualifying School in 2018, he lifted two titles the following season. First came the Magical Kenya Open and then the Belgian Knockout, which catapulted him from 203rd on the world rankings into the top 100.

After a much quieter 2020 – the global pandemic, which hit Italy particularly hard in the early stages, meant he did not play for 20 weeks of it – his talent was there for all to see again in March when a closing 65 left him only one shot behind Antoine Rozner at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

Then came two more runner-up finishes in the space of three weeks. He lost a play-off for the BetFred British Masters to Richard Bland at The Belfry, three-putting the first extra hole, but was five behind Bernd Wiesberger in Denmark.

Achieved his third Tour win at the 2022 Cazoo French Open, his approach over water to set up a closing birdie one of the shots of the golfing year.
